He moved to Barcelona, Spain, in 1983 to continue his art. For three years he lived and worked in his studio in a remote mountain village in central Andalucia (see views). The village and area can be seen in several works of the “landscape visions” page in this website. He traveled to India, Nepal and Ecuador’s amazons and Andean regions to pursue his interests in shamanism, tantra and indigenous peoples. There were encounters with shamans, and experiences with ayahuasca (see views).
In 1989 Richard returned to the United States due to a clerical error. In 1998 he settled in Knoxville, Tennessee. He has exhibited at the Clarksville, Oakridge and Knoxville Art Museums of Tennessee. A retrospective of Richard’s art was celebrated at the Fountain City Art Center of Knoxville in 2005.
The third national exhibit of “Straight Lines and Faces are Illusory’ with Richard and Randall Whitehead was held at Susan Key Galleries in Knoxville in 2000. Other national exhibits include Pro Arts of Oakland, California; “The Small Works Show” in New York City; “The Unbroken Line” at the Museum of American Art in Philadelphia, along with The Plastic Club and the PAFA Fellowship also in Philadelphia.
In the Knoxville area he has shown with The Arts & Culture Alliance , A-1 Lab Art Space, Farragut Arts Council, The Art Market, Kaleidoscope, Liz Beth Gallery, Nomad Gallery, the Art Gallery of Julie Dayton, Arts in The Airport Exhibits, the Shady Grove Gallery of Dandridge, Bill Shores Gallery of Chattanooga, Johnson City Arts Council, Nelson Fine Art Gallery of Johnson City and the Athens Art Gallery. He was represented several times in The Artful Home: A Source & Guide for Residential Art of Guild.com.
